Here are a few things to look out for in order to ensure your family is safe from toxic furniture.

No Formaldehyde - When furniture has high concentrations of formaldehyde it can start causing problems from skin irritation to cancer. Look for No Formaldehyde or low formaldehyde products.  Keep in mind the furniture which usually has the most formaldehyde is MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) Furniture also known as plywood.  This is because engineered wood is made by gluing wood pieces or sawdust together.  There's a lot of glue used in this process and almost always the glue contains high amounts of formaldehyde.  So we recommend buying solid wood furniture as much as you can.

No VOC - Ideally you will want No VOC or low VOC finishes on your furniture pieces.  VOC's are chemicals that can lower your air quality at home.  This can result in lung irritation or cancer.  Look for furniture that has natural oil finishes or water base finishes to be safe.
