10K-Karat Gold

  • Pros: Very affordable and durable
  • Cons: Lighter shade of gold, can trigger metal allergies

10 karat gold is made up of 41.7% gold and 58.3% alloy, or 10 out of 24 parts gold. 10K gold is the least expensive out of the other options as it is comprised of the least amount of gold 10/24 parts.  This is also the reason why it is the most durable since 58.3% is made of alloys.

10K gold is not typically used for engagement rings or wedding rings since the gold content is lower than the other options.  14K gold and 18K gold are both good options for wedding jewelry.

The greatest advantage of 10K gold is it's cost and durability.  The appearance of 10K gold has a light gold hue which is not rich in color.  The color is a matter of preference.  If you are on a budget then 10K gold is the perfect option for you.  Since it is highly durable 10K gold will be extremely difficult to scratch, scuff, or bend.

If you have allergies to certain metals then 10K gold will not be a good option.  Since there is a high content of alloys you may be sensitive to 10K Gold.   If your'e allergic to copper, silver, nickel, zinc, or iron then its probably best that you look for 14K or 18K gold.

How To Care For 10k Gold

Make sure to care for your gold jewelry with the following tips:

  • Remove your fine jewelry before using household chemicals like ammonia or bleach.  These can damage metals and gemstones.
  • Apply hairsprays, perfumes, or lotions before wearing your fine jewelry.
  • Avoid chlorine and the sauna.
  • Keep it away from wood as some woods have chemically treated surfaces.
  • Remove fine jewelry before you play sports or use the gym
